Since 1972, the Kilo Foundation has funded ongoing research into diabetes, striving to develop medications and interventions to reduce complications associated with the disease. Type 1 diabetes, formerly known as juvenile or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a metabolic disease where the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin, resulting in the body’s inability to regulate blood sugar levels. In the United States, 1 to 3 million people are affected, accounting for 5 to 10 percent of all diabetes cases.

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes include dry mouth, increased hunger and thirst, and excessive urination, as well as weight loss, fatigue, and other unusual behavior. Individuals with Type 1 diabetes must carefully monitor glucose levels and inject insulin several times a day, in addition to managing diet and exercise habits.
